Midnight Crossroad, Texas is a bizarre town full of supernatural beings. I am only familiar with Charlaine Harris through her Sookie Stackhouse books and I was unsure if I would like this new offering. With that being said, It did take me a few chapters to get into- but once I was there, I couldn’t put it down. The best way I can describe it is as a omnipresent narrative. Midnight Crossroad has a writing style unlike anything I have ever read before. Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.
